AI websites, Skills and read-only MCP basics

Separate content, reusable instructions and tool protocols in a small local site, then verify minimal permissions using synthetic data.

A quick glossary

Models generate and reason. Agents use tools to work on tasks. A harness manages an agent’s environment. MCP connects tools and data. Skills are reusable task guidance.

Current task

Deliver a three-page production build, one statically inspectable Skill and one read-only synthetic-data MCP server. Retain tool listing, a successful call and at least four failure cases; no secrets or external writes, with client/SDK/protocol versions recorded.

Prerequisites

Know basic HTML, files and terminals; prepare Git, local Node.js and an editor. Pin SDK/runtime versions from current Astro and MCP tutorials; any agent account/API must be legitimately provided but is not required for this exercise.

Estimated time

Plan 3–5 sessions of 30–60 minutes; downloads and rendering are additional, not measured.

Limits & boundaries

Treating Skills as executable plugins or MCP as a model, stdout logging, dependency drift and browser-embedded keys; protocol connectivity does not validate agent features or security boundaries.

Validation

Deliver a three-page production build, one statically inspectable Skill and one read-only synthetic-data MCP server. Retain tool listing, a successful call and at least four failure cases; no secrets or external writes, with client/SDK/protocol versions recorded.

Next steps

Pass the route’s acceptance checks before adding one variable; retain failed samples, versions, costs and rights records.

Cost

Not verified

Amounts unverified. Local software can use existing hardware; model licensing, VRAM, storage, electricity and labor are separate. Cloud, APIs or subscriptions may charge.

Implementation steps

  1. 01
Build an independently working local static page
  2. 02
Write the editorial process as a minimal Skill
  3. 03
Add one offline read-only MCP tool
